Helen is an Artist Basket Maker creating contemporary and traditional basketry.
Much of the willow I use is home grown from cuttings I specially selected for it's basket making qualities. I harvest it myself in the winter months, seeing the process through from start to finish which gives my practice a circular and sustainable ethos.

Studying the ancient craft of basketry over the years has given me a rich understanding of the material and how it behaves, this is gained through doing and repetition. I made my first baskets on a weekend course in rural Herefordshire with Jenny Pearce 15 years ago. I knew then that I had to explore more, 'I got the bug!' continuing at home with the notes I'd made and a book on basketry for beginners I was able to practice and repeat the basic round basket. From then I knew that that was what I wanted to do, the way the willow felt in my hands, the smell of it, it just felt natural.
Over the next couple of years I went back to Jenny several times, developing my skill set and knowledge with her help and guidance. I was by then starting to sell some of my baskets at local craft fairs.
In 2016 and 2017 I was lucky enough to attend basket making courses in the West coast of Ireland with Irish basket maker Joe Hogan, a master at his work. These were an absolute delight and inspiration for me allowing me to improve my techniques and absorb some of Joe's outstanding knowledge of the craft.
Making with willow is food for my soul, it's versatile nature means there is so much you can do with it, whether I am creating functional or contemporary pieces there is always more to explore.
I graduated in 2022 with first class hons from BA in Contemporary Design Crafts at Hereford College of Art. This has led to new adventures and opening of doors, exhibiting with 'Green Grads' in London and at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair in Manchester. Being chosen for 'graduate innovator' award by Design Nation and joining the Crafts Council Directory.
In 2025 I made the move from the UK to Co Leitrim In the Republic of Ireland, I have always got a project on the go and willow soaking in my tank, experimenting and creating when ideas come to me. I am happy to take on commissions, so if you have something in mind please don't hesitate to get in touch.
WORKSHOPS and COURSES
I run basket making workshops throughout the year in the west of Ireland, Co Leitrim. These one day workshops are suitable for beginners or those with some experience. Residential basketry retreats put on annually at Hellens Manor, Herefordshire, UK where you will be taught by myself plus a guest basket maker tutor.
